Johnnie Walker whisky will be available in a paper-based bottle in early 2021.
Diageo, the company that owns the brand, announced that it has created the “world’s first-ever 100 percent plastic-free paper-based spirits bottle” in a bid to protect the environment.
The company has teamed up with venture management company Pilot Lite to launch a sustainable packaging company called Pulpex Limited to create a bottle that is made of sustainably-sourced wood.
Diageo’s chief sustainability officer Ewan Andrew said,” We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking.”
“Pulpex Limited has developed a ‘first-of-its-kind’ scalable paper-based bottle designed and developed to be 100 per cent plastic-free and expected to be fully recyclable,” Diageo wrote in a statement.
Diageo also hopes that the creation of the bottle will inspire other firms to “rethink their packaging designs” without “compromising on the existing quality of the product.”
